Literature Text

It seems like you wait hours to hear the wet "sshhhllk" of blade tearing through flesh, but there is no dull thud, no sound of a head dropping to the floor, and you peek your eyes open to see Thor blocking Loki's neck with Mjolnir.  You want to cry.  You want to laugh.  You settle for clasping your hands tightly and hope no one notices your steadily growing grin.

"You fools," he bellows, brows furrowing, "you heard this clever girl speak, but didn't listen.  She's right; he should get nothing less than he deserves.  But also nothing more.  He has committed offenses against the Jotuns and therefore us by nearly causing war, for his attack on the city of New York, and hiding Odin away to claim the throne.

"They were acts committed by a power-hungry trickster and should not be overlooked.  But perhaps these past two can be.  As Lady [y/n] said, she was not kidnapped and no one was harmed, and on top of that, he saved her from certain death.  She has been granted with the gift - or curse - of immortality, but who will she harm with that?"

"No one!" You pipe up, eyes wide.

"See?  This girl isn't a God of Mischief, that is my brother; you should not fear that she is lying.  Perhaps more time in a prison cell would do him good," murmurs of approval rise up at that statement, but they're beaten down when Thor continues, "but perhaps it would just cause him more anger to later be unleashed upon all of us.  We will keep a watchful eye on him - on both of them - but there will be no death today."  Thor once again lets Mjolnir rest at his side, and he turns his back on the room, calling out over his shoulder as he goes, "Now unshackle him, this choice will do no good if he doesn't have the chance to prove himself."

As soon as the guards have escorted both of you back to Loki's room and left, the doors closing with a definite click, you're swept up into his arms, his figure stooped in such a way that your face is tucked neatly into the side of his neck, his sweet scent filling your nose.  You hug him back hesitantly, confused at this sudden display of emotion and the way his body quakes under your fingertips.

"Loki, are you okay?" You ask, just as he mumbles into your hair, "You've saved my life, [y/n], and I don't know how I'll ever repay you."

"Oh, no need for… repayment.  I wouldn't have been able to live with myself if I'd just let them do as they pleased."  He pulls away from you now, and you awkwardly release him, cradling your elbows in your palms, slightly swaying side to side.

"What I don't understand is why."

"Why what?"

"Why you would have been so devastated.  I've been horrible to you, but you've been nothing but forgiving."

"Well, you did sorta save my life too, you know.  And also… oh geez, don't make me say it, you already know, you jerk."

"No, I want to hear it out loud.  I'm not quite done being terrible just yet."  He smirks - such cheek! - clearly teasing you.  You take the bait.

"I like you, Loki.  You already know that because of when you spied on me back on Midgard and because I basically confessed to you before the banquet, so I don't know why you still need to hear it, but I like you.  And I'm truly an idiot for feeling this way."

"Yes, you really quite are, aren't you?  That's okay though, it seems that I'm able to look past that flaw rather easily."  Those blue-green eyes set to sparkling and your mouth opens in a small "oh" before your lips break into a smile.

"You had better not be lying!" You warn him, wagging a finger.

"Cross my heart," he solemnly promises, making an 'x' over his chest, before taking your shoulders in his hands and pulling you close.  One hand entwined in your hair and one resting on the small of your back, you nudge your cheek against his chest.

"I think that I started developing feelings for you when you were still in Midgard, and I had not met you yet.  They were simply attractions for you inner workings, as you know, but when I met you - as a cat, yes - I was fascinated by your habits and interests.  You are truly a strange person, you know."  He pauses and you can practically feel his sassy smile.  "When you confessed to me, I panicked and said those things because I felt the same way - I wanted you to… be my girlfriend."  You aren't sure what to say, but he doesn't seem to need words.  He allows you to just find comfort in his arms, and maybe, just maybe, he is doing the same.
"Well then. Short version. Not dead. Bit mean, springing it on you like that, I know. Could have given you a heart attack; probably still will. In my defense it was very funny... Okay, it's not a great defense."
